8/11; Clark's group was complete 11/8 with the unexpected return
of the horse crew after the animals vanished(?) enroute to the Mandan
Villages (See page crt13 for Clark's horse
trading plan). They continued down the Missouri and camped near
MT HWY 23 crosses the river. The next morning, "Capt. Lewis
hove in Sight with the party...." He was lying in a canoe suffering
from a wound in his thigh. While elk hunting the previous day, myopic
Pierre Cruzatte accidentally shot him. Clark started medical treatment
and Lewis was able to walk easily by September 15, about 2 weeks
before reaching St. Louis. He discontinued his journal 8/12/06.
The reunited Corps of Discovery returned to the Mandan-Hidatsa villages
8/14; having left for the west 4/7/05.(See top center info signs.)
After several tribal meetings, Clark convinced Mandan Chief, Big
White, to come with him
