to Washington to meet the president. John Colter was allowed to leave the Corps and go west with 2 trappers. The party gained 5 more travelers- Chief Big White's wife and son; interpreter Jusseaume with wife and 2 children. Clark; "took our leave of T Chabono, his Snake Indian wife [Sacagawea] and Son ["Pomp"] and headed down river to visit the Aricara Villages, arriving 8/18. After ceremonies Clark found no chief to go with him. The final important visit, 9/4, was a solemn one-Charles Floyd's grave, near Sioux City, IA. He died possibly from a burst appendix 8/20/04. (See lct8-10). 9/5-23/06; The Corps proceeded down the Missouri, meeting trappers/ traders, to St Louis and a grand reception.

8/11; Clark's group was complete 11/8 with the unexpected return of the horse crew after the animals vanished(?) enroute to the Mandan Villages (See page crt13 for Clark's horse trading plan). They continued down the Missouri and camped near MT HWY 23 crosses the river. The next morning, "Capt. Lewis hove in Sight with the party...." He was lying in a canoe suffering from a wound in his thigh. While elk hunting the previous day, myopic Pierre Cruzatte accidentally shot him. Clark started medical treatment and Lewis was able to walk easily by September 15, about 2 weeks before reaching St. Louis. He discontinued his journal 8/12/06. The reunited Corps of Discovery returned to the Mandan-Hidatsa villages 8/14; having left for the west 4/7/05.(See top center info signs.)
