panels on I-90 discuss aspects of horse theft in Crow culture. Clark
didn't know, until August 8, that the rest of the horses were taken
from Pryor's camp the night of 7/26. The Corps had collected many
horses trading with tribes along the way, beginning with Sacajawea's
Shoshones led by her brother, Cameahwait, who traded about 30 to them
for the trek over Lemhi Pass and the Bitteroot Mts heading west. The
Corps left 38 horses with the Nez Perce in present Idaho when they
canoed on the Clearwater west in '05. They had 65 horses at Travelers'
Rest in '06. Lewis took 15(?) for his Marias exploration, and Clark's
Yellowstone party drove 50 east. The entire '06 herd was lost or stolen
by 8/12/06! |
