Clark Return Trail
Information panels explain the lack of large trees for constructing canoes as the Corps did, with the help of Nez Perce skills, at the 1805 Canoe Camp with large ponderosa pines (see lct222-225). Clark improvised a new design. He selected 2 trees for two canoes, 28ft long, 16-28 inches deep, and 16-24 inches wide. They were lashed together catamaran style - info panel top left explains his plan. With one canoe "nearly finished" ready to test on the water, 7/21 morning, news that 24 horses had vanished overnight, 1/2 of the herd, added another challenge. The crew continued to prepare food and clothing for running the Yellowstone. 7/23: Clark ordered Pryor to start for Mandan villages with the remaining horses immediately.
