Orofino
Idaho
Lewis & Clark Trail
One interpretive sign at Canoe Camp, 4 mi. NW of Orofino on US HWY 12, summarizes the Expedition's stay here, on the south side of the Clearwater River, fashioning dugout canoes from large ponderosa pines. They all suffered from a diet of mostly camas roots and salmon. They were used to various kinds of meat before this, but the hunters found little here. Game was scarce near so many Nez Perce villages.
