7/19: Clark wrote that Gibson had severe pain in "Knee and hip as well as his thy" so had him on a horse with "Skins & blankets" to ease the pain. After 9 miles he had to stop-too much pain. Clark had "Sergt Pryor and one man" stay with him and slowly follow while Clark moved on, searching for trees suitable for canoes. After "...about 4 miles...found some large timber near which the grass was tolerably good I Encamped under a thick grove of those trees." After a daily search from 7/15 to 7/19, he had to choose those available now to save travel time. Even with the stress of the canoe problem, he continued to be impressed with the abundance of wildlife.
