The
Nez Perce guides, who helped the Corps over the treacherous Bitteroot
Mountains from the Clearwater Long Camp (see lct211)
remained with the Lewis contingent until July4. They were in enemy
territory so were returning home. Lewis had hunters provide meat for
them to dry for the long return (illustrations left and right).

north from Travelers' Rest, along Bitteroot River, Lewis' July 3 route,
camping near the Clarks Fork and Blackfoot River confluence.
