On July 21 Lewis' team moved up the Marias; "at 2. P.M. we struck a northern branch of the Marias river...being convinced that this stream came from the mountains I determined to pursue it..." He guessed its source was the northwest mountains, but "...will not be as far north as I wished and expected." Top left, Cut Bank Creek joins Two Medicine River to become Marias. Drive south on Sullivan Bridge Rd. from Cut Bank. The confluence is at the bridge. Lewis noted cliffs lining the creek making travel difficult, as these images show. They camped "...in a narrow bottom under a Clift."-Lewis.
