Camp
Wood was located near the mouth of the river. Wood River meets the
Mississippi farther north now but this site, near the Mississippi
and a side channel, approximates the probable location according to
experts. A peephole in the protruding cabin wall, right, provides
a good view of the main gate from within the camp. The Corps would
build two more Forts during their trek. Most sources call this one
a "camp" with a few calling it a "fort." As you
will see they are all similar in construction. Military manuals use
the word "camp' whenever the troops are housed in non-hostile
territory. Camp Wood was in friendly surroundings. |
