The
captains chose to winter on the east side of the Mississippi several
miles above St Louis at the confluence with Wood River - hence the
name: Camp Wood. Sometimes they used the French name: DuBois River
and Camp Dubois. Lewis officially named it " Camp River Dubois."
The replica fort at the Lewis & Clark State Historic Site, gives
one a close view of the Corps' construction skills. The historic site
is located a few miles north of I-270. Take IL HWY 3 north to the
outskirts of Hartford. |
