The
Old Courthouse Museum sits on a hill just west of the arch. It houses
a collection of early St Louis history - from 1803. The Courthouse
is famous for the Dred Scott Trial. You can view an 1846 replica courtroom
from that trial. Of the many Lewis & Clark items here, these dioramas
depicting the transfer of Upper Lousiana Territory are unique. Above,
Lewis (left) and Clark (right) attend in civilian clothes with French
and American soldiers around them. On the previous day Spanish officials
had turned over the territory to the French who, in turn, relinquished
ownership to the Americans on March 10, 1804. The last transfer allowed
the Corps of Discovery to start their journey on American turf - or
water to be more exact. |
