Ulm, Montana is a few miles south of Great Falls, off I-15. These photos show the Missouri River from the Ulm Bridge Fishing Site. Captain Lewis had hidden the white pirogue at the Lower Portage Camp. He intended to assemble his iron boat frame as a replacement. When it failed to float, Clark took several crew members up river, just east of Ulm, to cut cottonwood trees. They fashioned two new canoes to replace the failed iron boat. The "canoe camp' site is on private land and not accessible.
