Springs water gravitates from the Little Belt Mountains, south east
of Great Falls. It travels under ground, through limestone, to the
springs. The journey takes less than 50 years, then bubbles up 400
feet to the surface. The rock bed of the springs, right, doesn't hinder
the flow; water forces its way through cracks in the rocks, using
the pressure of the rocks to propel it. Over 150 million gallons of
water flows from the spring into the Missouri every day. A fish hatchery
operates here, with a pool displaying some of the fish found in the
Missouri. During their stay, Corps members dined on a variety of fish
caught in the Missouri. Lewis discovered the cutthroat trout here,
top right. The scientific name is for Clark. |
