The
Western Expansion Museum has a fine collection of peace medals given
to prominent chiefs, by Lewis & Clark. The medals came in various
sizes - 4", 3"and 2 1/4". They consisted of struck
sheet silver on a wood core. The larger ones went to the more important
chiefs. All have disappeared partly because of the disintegration
of the materials used. William Clark's portrait, top left. Meriwether
Lewis's, bottom right. |
