While
examining Black Eagle Falls, Captain Lewis looked ahead and found
that the Missouri was gradually turning south. Also, he noticed a
large river entering the Missouri from the west about 4 miles away.
He was "...convinced that it was the river which the Indians
call medicine river and which they informed us fell into the Missouri
just above the falls." This river is now called the Sun River.
After an altercation with a grizzly bear, which forced Lewis to wade
into the Missouri to escape, he explored the Medicine River's confluence.
The confluence, above, entering across the Missouri. The view is from
the east side of the Missouri, now flowing from the south. A series
of small parks and trails runs along the Missouri's east bank here.
Oddfellows Park is right opposite the Sun's confluence. River Drive
S allows you to drive through these parks. Right, two views of Sun
River a ways up from the mouth. Residential neighborhoods make it
a convoluted route search for access. Use city street maps. |
