Captain
Lewis discovered Sulphur Spring, top left, while exploring the series
of falls. It's located on the north side of the Missouri River. Later,
he would send men back to get some of the water to help cure Sacajawea's
serious illness - hence the name, Sacajawea Spring. Lewis also made
another important discovery. He had an excellent view of the south
side, left, and saw that the terrain would work for the portage around
the falls. The lower portage camp was just around the bend, on the
south side of the Missouri River. |
