							Ella Mae Howard and Madeline Leupp press flowers for our edification. They showed how Captain Lewis preserved specimens of new plant discoveries. Lewis found and named 178 new plant species during the journey, including Montana's state flower - the bitterroot flower. He and Captain Clark also wrote descriptions of 122 animals not known to science. Prairie dogs, Lewis's " barking squirrels" was one. They spotted 134 bird species, Clark's nutcracker and Lewis's woodpecker among them.
