The
unofficially named " Sacajawea Rock," top left, appears
on the south bank of the Missouri River. It's about 20 minutes up
river from Slaughter River - timed while leisurely floating down stream.
More bizarre sandstone formations appeared on both sides as the Corps
moved steadily up the Missouri. The crew would have observed these
geologic formations on May 30th. No journal mentions Sacajawea Rock,
but Captain Lewis noted that the air was much drier. So much drier
that his ink dried out and his sextant case shrunk and joints came
apart. |
