Fort Benton
The Corps left the Missouri-Marias confluence on June 11th & 12th, 1805. The Captains were fairly certain they had chosen the correct river, but they needed to find the Great Falls to be sure. Lewis, with four crew members, hiked on land, staying some distance from the river to avoid ravines. Clark and the flotilla moved upstream on the 12th and camped about 5 miles below Fort Benton. The bottom left and top right images look down stream toward Clark's June 12th camp. The other two images clearly show why Lewis would stay back from the river when passing Fort Benton. Next, I backtracked on the LC Trail driving US HWY 87 east to Loma and Decision Point.
