Fort
Benton has some history of its own as the last steamboat landing on
the upper Missouri River. Some historic buildings remain. Captain
Lewis walked along the hills here while Captain Clark oversaw the
grueling work of hauling the canoes over sandbars and controlling
them in swift currents. One of Bob Scriver's sculptures - the official
state of Montana memorial statue - stands near the local museum. The
LC display, top right, is in the museum. The BLM's Upper Missouri
Visitor Center sits at the other end of town - it looks out on the
Missouri scene, right. |
