Taking US HWY 2 out of the Missouri-Yellowstone area, you drive
west along the north side of the Missouri. I didn't see much to
photograph so continued into Montana.
Fort Peck Lake - dammed Missouri - is surrounded by the Russell
NWR. I wasn't equipped to access the lake on the gravel and dirt
roads, so turned south on US HWY 191 at Malta and met the river
at the west end of the refuge. The James Kipp Recreation Area (BLM)
has a campground right at the south end of the Robinson Bridge within
the NWR. This allowed me to stay for early and late light photography
along the Missouri.
The Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument meets the west
end of the Russell National Wildlife Refuge a few miles up river.
The Breaks can be accessed at points along gravel roads. The best
way to experience the Breaks in the Lewis & Clark spirit is
to be on the Missouri - you can cheat a bit and float down instead
of rowing up. Two years after this 2007 trip I got to canoe down
the river in June '09.
