Ft. Union National Historic Site
Ft. Union stands on the north bank of the Missouri 2 1/2 miles west of Ft. Buford State Historic Site and Confluence Center. ND HWY 1804 west from Buford takes you there. John Jacob Astor's American Fur Company constructed the fort as a trading post in 1828. The Corp, with a good wind at its back, moved quickly up the Missouri (right, flowing past the fort) not noting the spot as a good fort site. However, the LC Expedition made the expansion of the fur trade possible. Left, The fort wall and main gate. Top right, Bourgeois House.
