Still
following HWY 100 on the south side of the Missouri River, I arrived
at Gasconade. L&C camped on an island at the mouth of the Gasconade
River, right. The river runs through the town, above. The fact that
Gasconade is a working river town is evident by the barges tied up
just inside the junction of the Gasconade and Missouri, top right.
The sign on the previous page describes the activities of May
27 as they moved up river to their Gasconade camp. Two more fur laden
canoes passed them on the way down river from trading with the Pawnee,
Omaha, and Osage tribes. The Corps remained at the Gasconade camp
another day. The baggage in the red pirogue had gotten wet and needed
thorough drying. |
