Marthasville
- the next stop on HWY 94 . It's as near to the May 25, 1804 and Sept.
20, 1806 camps as you can get on land. They stopped on the river at
the mouth of Charrette Creek at a French village of small houses (La
Charrette) similar to this replica in a park at Marthasville. Clark
reported: ... people at this Village is pore, houses Small, they Sent
us milk and eggs... . Fur trapper Regis Loisel arrived from "400
Leagues up..." - Clark. He provided information about tribes
up river. La Charrette was the last white settlement the Corps would
see until their stop here on the return. |
