The
fort replica is tucked into a tall Sitka spruce forest. Experts think
it's very close to the original site. While Captain Clark, with most
of the Corps, was pinned down by bad weather, on Tongue Point, Captain
Lewis forged ahead looking for a winter camp. He, with five men, paddled
the small native canoe into Youngs Bay, 2 miles up the Netul River
(later Lewis and Clark River), and selected this site. He returned
to Tongue Point on December 5, 1805, to report his results. When he
saw it 2 days later, Clark issued his opinion: "[It's] the most
eligable Situation for our purposes of any in its neighbourhood." |
