Astoria Oregon - Fort Clatsop
This sign, top left, greets visitors on the main road into Fort Clatsop. The statue of Sacajawea and baby "Pomp" greets visitors as they leave the Visitor Center, heading for the Fort Clatsop replica. A copy of the statue stands in Sacajawea Lake Park, Longview WA. The grounds of the fort are luxuriant with plants noted in the journals. Wapato, left, was essential to the Corps's food supply ever since being introduced to it earlier in the journey. On November 4, 1805, near present Portland, Clark described this experience: "[An Indian] gave us a roundish roots about the Size of a Small Irish potato which they roasted in the embers until...Soft."
