Clark's map, with added details, shows the relative locations of the
late1805, and early 1806 camps. The latter site is identified in Clark's
writing: "Camp 23 of March returning 1806" "Point William"
is Clark's name for Tongue Point. The Corps left Ft Clatsop for the
final time. Clark: "the rained Seased and it became fair...we
loaded our Canoes & at 1 P.M. left Fort Clatsop on our homeward
bound journey." He also commented on "the repeeted fall
of rain" during the fall and winter. They camped at the mouth
of Mill Creek, above and top right. Thanks to local members of the
Lewis & Clark Trail Heritage Foundation, we were able to visit
this site on private land. Right, Tongue Point lies west, behind this
island. |
