Captain
Clark's excursion party returned to Station Camp from the Cape Disappointment/Long
Beach trek on November 20, 1805. On the 24th the Corps voted to explore
the south side of the Columbia River for a winter camp (see page 334).
I returned by auto to US HWY 101, crossed the bridge to Astoria. Although
the Corps skirted this peninsula on their way to Youngs Bay, the Astoria
Column murals include Lewis and Clark scenes in its spiral Northwest
history collection. It's 200 feet high with 164 steps to the top.
Right, Youngs Bay. |
