On
November 4, 1805, the Corps moved out from the camp on Government
or McGuire Island - they were one island at the time - headed for
the Pacific Ocean. In the vicinity of the future Ft. Vancouver, Captain
Clark pulled ashore and "here I landed and walked on Shore, about
three miles a fine open Prarie for about 1 mile, back of which the
countrey rises gradually and wood land comencies Such as white oake,
pine of different kinds...." On March 30, 1806, on the return
trip, Captain Lewis also walked in the general area of Vancouver.
His words are similar to those used later in the century by Oregon
Trail boosters: "the highlands in this valley are rolling tho'
by no means too steep for cultivation they are generally fertile of
a dark rich loam and tolerably free of stones." Our journey will
continue to the Pacific Ocean in the next segment on this site. |
