The
photo, above, shows Strawberry Island where Captain Clark and Joseph
Fields hiked toward "Beaten Rock" on Oct. 31, 1805. On the
return journey in April, 1806, Clark would officially name it "
Beacon Rock" . It's one of the few geographic spots that has
retained the name designated by Lewis and Clark. Although Clark arrived
at Strawberry Island before getting to Beacon Rock, I only discovered
the importance of the island in LC lore from the interpretive sign
at Beacon Rock and had to backtrack to explore the island. |
