After
passing and renaming "Beaten Rock," on the return trip,
the Corps pulled into a native village a few miles up the Columbia.
Here, they had the good fortune cited above. This interpretive sign
is located at Beacon Rock State Park. I guess it's the closest place
to the old village site with public access. Lewis and Clark often
complained about the tough bargaining stance and the constant thievery
of the Columbia River tribes, but they also worked a few good deals
of their own. Right, I'm headed west on WA HWY 14 to the next Lewis
and Clark site; Steamboat Landing, a few miles east of Washougal Washington. |
