The
Corps found smooth paddling through this area on the journey west.
The return upriver was a different story. An interpretive sign, in
the beach, area explains why this happens. As the Corps struggled
against the current and strong winds, they tried to barter for horses.
However, the locals wanted only beads in exchange. Lewis and Clark
had none. Eventually, according to Ordway:"we Sold old Robes
Elk Skins &C. &C. for white beeds." Horse gathering followed. |
