Lyle Washington
Doug's Beach State Park lies 3 miles east of Lyle on WA HWY 14. An interpretive sign stands in the parking area beside HWY 14. After negotiating Celilo Falls, the Corps pushed down the Columbia, pulling ashore occasionally to examine many of the villages in this area; the captains constantly bargained for salmon and dogs to keep the troops victualed. Rough cliffs still dominated the north shore, but Ordway noted a change to the south: "Saw a beautiful Spring on the Lard. [south] Side, which run off a high cliff... and fell...upwards of 100 feet perpinticular. the country Mountaineous .... mostly covred with pine timber." They were approaching the east end of the Columbia Gorge.
