On
October 24th, the Expedition pulled into shore at Horsethief Lake
State Park, now Columbia Hills State Park. They found a native village
of wooden houses. These were the first wooden structures used by Indians
they had seen on the entire journey so far. These ancient pictographs
attest to the long habitation of the area. This collection was rescued
from a site near the Columbia River before The Dalles Dam slowed the
flow and raised the river. The view above is to the east. The railroad
tracks cross the water to form a lake. |
