The Expedition's battle with the Long and Short Narrows is well documented in the interpretative displays in the park. These two falls together formed The Dalles. The Short Narrows squeezed the river into a 45 yard wide channel. Three miles down river, the Long Narrows ran another three miles in a 50 - 100 yard wide channel. Hundreds of Indians watched the running of the rapids by the boat crews.
