A mile west of the first Wishram turnout (see previous page) on
WA HWY 14, there's a larger turnout with more interpretive signs;
Wishram Overlook. These signs explain the significance of this area
that the Corps paddled into on October 22, 1805. John Ordway described
the first contact at a Celilo Falls village on the north side: "we
halted about noon a Short distance above at a large Indian villages.
the huts of which is covred with white ceeder bark these Savages
have an abundance of dry and pounded Sammon we bought Some from
them and Some flag & grass mats &C."
