Lewis and Clark both recorded the lack of trees when they entered
the Columbia Plateau. The hills around Celilo Falls look the same
now in these images of the north shore of the Columbia River seen
from Celilo State Park. Shortly after entering the Columbia from
the Snake River, Sgt. Ordway's October 18, 1805 journal entry noted:
"no timber along the Shores." Two days later he added:
"no wood except a fiew Small willows." They began buying
cooking wood from the locals - if they could. They faced the same
problem on their return trip, trading for wood as well as horses.
