Celilo
State Park, on the Oregon side of the Columbia River, has only one
interpretive sign. The Wishram Washington site has several (see later
pages). However, Celilo has one advantage as a LCT site; you can camp
here, right by the river at no cost. The sign explains the importance
of fishing and trading engaged in by the local tribes. After dams
were built in the 1950's, salmon runs plumeted and a way of life ended.
The tribes received exclusive fishing rights on the river; however
these rights were not cleared by the US Government until the 1980's!
A native fishing platform extends over the river at Celilo Park. They
still fish with nets in the traditional fashion. |
