Interpretive
signs inside and outside of the Sacajawea State Park Interpretive
Center introduce guests to the variety of Native Americans living
around the Columbia and Snake Rivers, and on the Columbia Plateau.
As the Corps proceeded down the Columbia River they saw evidence of
a wide trading system. Sailor style clothing, metal pots, and wool
blankets were evidence of a link with ocean ships. Little did they
realize that Columbia River salmon were a medium of exchange for local
tribes. While camped at the confluence point, Clark was invited to
a meal in a Wanapam lodge; it was boiled salmon. |
