The
top left, center, and right images show three different stages of
cow parsnip growing in Lewis and Clark Trail State Park. From left
to right: seeds produced by the flower; The full flower; and the stem
and tattered leaf. The stalk was the edible part of the plant according
to the natives. The three young Walla Walla Indians, who introduced
Lewis to cow parsnip (see previous page) had returned a lost steel
trap to the party. Lewis remarked: "...this is an act of integrity
rarely witnessed among indians." He went on to give superlative
accolades to the entire Walla Walla tribe: "...they are the most
hospitable, honest, and sincere people that we have met with in our
voyage." |
