Signs at the interpretive kiosk at Lewis & Clark Trail State Park cover the story of the return trek from the Columbia River to the Snake River. Top left, the Touchet River runs west through the park to the Walla Walla River. The Corps intersected the Touchet River on April 30, 1806. They left the Columbia and Walla Walla Rivers that morning. They followed the Touchet River after their bivouac at the Touchet on the 30th. You can follow part of this route, in reverse, by taking WA HWY 124 from Waitsburg. This highway also allows access to the next outbound LC site on the Snake River via a side road. You can also drive south on US HWY 12 to Walla Walla (See map on lct239b).
