By
the time the Corps reached the upper Snake River, they had few goods
left to trade for food. On May 4, 1806, while camped near their October
10, 1805 camp, Sgt. Gass noted the scarcity of food; one dog to feed
the entire Corps ( see his quote on previous page). A perusal of the
index to Gary Moulton's abridged version of the journals shows 14
pages referring to "dogs: as food." Apparently, the Corps
had their first taste of dog in late August, 1804 while meeting with
the Yankton Sioux. Right, the view southwest from the trail. |
