Trail
By the time the Corps reached the upper Snake River, they had few goods left to trade for food. On May 4, 1806, while camped near their October 10, 1805 camp, Sgt. Gass noted the scarcity of food; one dog to feed the entire Corps ( see his quote on previous page). A perusal of the index to Gary Moulton's abridged version of the journals shows 14 pages referring to "dogs: as food." Apparently, the Corps had their first taste of dog in late August, 1804 while meeting with the Yankton Sioux. Right, the view southwest from the trail.
