Lewis & Clark Trail

Continuing northwest on HWY 193, Wawawai Park is worth visiting just for its pleasant atmosphere on a hot day. Interpretive signs are located in the parking lot, along the trail, and in the lower park. An interpretive trail winds up a hill on the north side of the park. The 3/4 mile trail can be extended to 1 mile by starting or ending at the group shelter. There is a small day use charge. You can camp in the park too. While among the Nez Perce on the Snake River, Lewis started describing them and their customs. In his October 10, 1805 entry, he noted: "The Cho-pun-ish or Pierced nose Indians are Stout likely men, handsom women and verry dressey in their way...." Left, view south from the trail.
