On
Oct. 7th, 1805, the Corps camped near here, on the north bank of the
Clearwater River, above. These scenes are at the Lenore rest stop
on US HWY 12. It's 16 miles west of Orofino. Private Whitehouse described
the landscape in this area: "There is some Clifts of rock, lying
along the Shore & a few scattering pine trees, growing on some
of the hills which are mostly broken & covered with grass."
Shoshone guides Old Toby and his son were still with the party. They
left without notice on the 9th. Two Nez Perce chiefs, Twisted Hair
and Tetoharsky, joined them on the 8th as interpreters for the tribes
they would meet down river. |
