This
is the Clearwater River about a mile west of Canoe Camp, at Pink House
Hole Campground, on US HWY 12. The canoes ran into rapids shortly
after pushing off from Canoe Camp the afternoon of October 7th, 1805.
They managed to maneuver through the turbulence and made 20 miles.
However, disaster struck the next day. Clark wrote: "...one canoe
in which Serjt. Gass was Stearing and was nearle turning over. She
Sprung a leak or Split open on one Side and Bottom filled with water
& Sunk on the rapid..." Top left, a mountain ash tree. |
