The
illustration on the previous page shows a Nez Perce fishing village
contemporary with the Expedition's passage through this area. The
ones on this page illustrate an ancient native village. The uneven
terrain, top right, is evidence of the village's location.
The Corps found out right away that the Nez Perce were important to
the area and to their survival. They were constantly trading with
Nez Perce villagers for food - even a dog. Ordway: "Some of our
party killed a fat dog which they had got from the Indians...They
roasted & eat it..." |
