While
Corps members transformed ponderosa pines into canoes, natives were
fishing nearby. The Nez Perce fishing village sat at the confluence
of the North Fork and Middle Fork Clearwater River, left. Dworshak
Dam, background in both images, slows North Fork's flow, creating
Dworshak Reservoir and Dworshak State Park. Captain Clark recorded
the Nez Perce name for the river: "The river below this forks
is Called Kos kos kee it is Clear rapid with Shoals or Swift places."The
Captains shortened the Nez Perce name into "Kooskee."
A paved walkway encircles the small park around Canoe Camp and the
ancient village site. Canoe replicas and some interpretive signs are
placed along the path. |
