Sergeant Pryor and Pierre Dorian, a trader among
the Yankton Sioux, went to make contact and invite the Sioux to
a council at Calumet Bluff. It was in the Yankton camp that Pryor
became the first Corps member to see a tepee. Pryor reported their
camp"was handson of a Conic form Covered with Buffalow Roabs
Painted different Colours..." (Clark's journal entry- Aug.
24, 1804). An authentic buffalo tepee stands in the museum, left.
An interior view of the smoke hole, center. A decorated war bonnet
hangs from the side of the tepee, right. The museum is located
at the St. Joseph Indian School in Chamberlain, SD.
