This
is the approximate vicinity of Dry Camp. It's about three miles west
of the 1806 Greensward Camp, on FR 500. While Capt. Clark forged ahead
with six hunters, Capt. Lewis used this site for the September 18,
1805 camp. The actual campsite has not been verified and may be farther
west than this spot. Local LCT expert Steve Russell states that USGS
maps have it "...several miles east of its true location...."
Lewis wrote: "[W]e marched 18 miles this day and encamped on
the side of a steep mountain; we suffered for water this day passing
one rivulet only; we wer fortunate in finding water in a steep raviene
about 1/2 maile from our camp." |
