Moving
west on FR 500, as the Corps did in 1805, our group passed the 1806
camp they used the night before they visited Smoking Place. Trekking
for days on snowfields, The captains were elated to find a bare place
to camp - it was on the slope of Bald Mountain. Pressed for time we
only stopped at the interpretive sign next to the road. The Corps
would have had this view south from their perch higher on the mountain.
