Although
The Corps didn't exactly pass through this grove, they experienced
similar terrain in 1805 when the passed on the ridgeline just south
of here. Captain Clark described the trek of September 14th: "The
Mountains which we passed today much worst than yesterday the last
excessively bad & Thickly Strowed with falling timber & Pine
Spruc fur Hackmatak & Tamerack..." He's describing Lodgepole
pine, Engelmann spruce, and fir trees - also growing among the ancient
cedars in DeVoto Memorial Grove. |
